House Rules

Baycliff Cottage and Cabins

Shared Property

There are three dwellings on the property: Baycliff (the house), the Guest House (cabin), and the Pines (cabin). Please be mindful that other guests and neighbors may be nearby, and keep noise at a respectful level at all times.

  • Smoking is not permitted anywhere on the property.

  • Swimming is not allowed.

  • Parking is limited to no more than two cars per dwelling.

Cliff Deck

  • All guests are welcome to enjoy the cliff deck.

  • Please do not monopolize the space — it is shared by everyone.

  • Be considerate and courteous of other guests.

  • A glass of wine on the deck in the evening is perfectly fine - just please keep voices low.

  • The cliff and the bay are for everyone’s enjoyment; thank you for being thoughtful of others.

Occupancy

Only guests listed in the registered party may stay overnight. Any additional overnight guests require prior approval from the owner and are the responsibility of the registered guest.

Maximum occupancy is five guests per cabin and six guests in the house, unless prior notice is given to the owner.

Appliances & Amenities

Please help us keep the property and furnishings in good condition by using all appliances and amenities only for their intended purposes.

If an accident occurs, or if something breaks or goes missing during your stay, please notify us as soon as possible so we can repair or replace it promptly.

​

Pets

  • Pets are welcome with prior approval from the owner before arrival.

  • Please clean up after your pet promptly and dispose of waste properly.

  • ​Please keep barking to a minimum and do not allow pets to chase chipmunks or other wildlife on the property.

  • If your pet sleeps in bed or sits on furniture, please use the designated blanket and set it aside so it can be laundered after your stay.​

Trash & Recycling

All trash and recycling should be placed in the appropriate receptacles located at the side of the house.

​

Housekeeping

There is no daily housekeeping service during your stay.

​

Septic System

All dwellings are on a septic system. Please flush toilet paper only. Feminine products or any other items should never be flushed.

How to Use a Wood Stove Safely

Before You Start

  • Use only dry, seasoned firewood. Wet wood creates excess smoke and creosote buildup.

  • Keep flammable items away from the stove.

Starting the Fire

  1. Open the Air Controls

    • Fully open the stove’s air intake vents by moving lever to the left to allow maximum airflow.

  2. Prepare the Firebox

    • Place several crumpled sheets of newspaper or fire starters in the center.

    • Add dry kindling (small sticks) in a crisscross pattern above the paper.

    • Place a few small logs on top of the kindling.

  3. Light the Fire

    • Light the newspaper or fire starter.

    • Close the stove door most of the way, leaving it cracked slightly for a few minutes if needed to help airflow.

    • Never leave the stove unattended with the door open.

  4. Build the Fire

    • Once the kindling is burning well and the small logs catch fire, add larger logs gradually.

    • Avoid overfilling the firebox.

Controlling Heat

  • After the fire is established, reduce the air intake slowly to control burn rate and heat.

  • More air = hotter, faster burn.

  • Less air = slower, longer burn.

  • Do not completely close the air supply while flames are active.

Adding More Wood

  • Open the door slowly to prevent smoke from entering the room.

  • Use fireplace tools when handling hot surfaces.

  • Add logs carefully and close the door securely afterward.

​

Ash Removal

  • Allow ashes to cool completely.

  • Remove excess ash regularly, leaving a thin layer on the bottom to help insulate the fire.

  • Store ashes in a metal container with a lid away from buildings or decks.

​

Safety Tips

  • Never burn:

    • Trash

    • Painted or treated wood

    • Cardboard with coatings

    • Plastics

    • Charcoal

  • Keep children and pets away from hot surfaces.

  • Check stove thermometer to avoid overheating.

Before Leaving or Going to Bed

  • Ensure the stove door is fully closed.

  • Reduce airflow to a safe overnight burn.

  • Never leave the stove with the door open.
